Faculty Fellowships
The UMKC Trustees’ Faculty Fellowships were established in 1987 by the trustees to recognize faculty members at UMKC who have distinguished themselves through scholarship and creativity. The recipients serve as role models and mentors and encourage other faculty members and students in pursuit of academic excellence. Two categories of awards are available – Faculty Fellow Award and Faculty Scholar Award.

What is your current research?
I currently research how U.S. Black adults learn and use computer programming at computer code boot camps to enrich their lives. That research, I hope, will impact how computer code boot camps train racially marginalized people in coding and to what realistic ends.
How did the award help you in your research?
I appreciate this award because it allows me to focus on writing. In Fall 2022, I will be on leave to make significant progress on my book project. The award provides extra funds for conference travel where I can present my work to other colleagues for comments that may enrich my book project and for purchasing books that strengthen the argument for readers.
Is there anything you’d like to say to the Board of Trustees?
I wish to thank the Board of Trustees for this special and prestigious recognition. Opportunities like this inspire me to pay forward the kindness and mentorship I have received to future awesome scholars at UMKC! I am happy to make UMKC the foundation for my work.
